Vidgo does not currently provide any cloud DVR or recording features although this might change in the future. While the company says it is committed to providing cloud DVR to subscribers, there’s been no confirmation on when the recording option will be added.
Vidgo has not been around for quite as long as some of the other services and that has impacted on the depth and quality of the features available. Due to this, consumers will want to take into consideration the missing features before signing up for a subscription.
Vidgo launched late last year and is a competitively priced service. For example, the standard cost of the basic Vidgo subscription is just $39.99 making it cheaper than AT&T TV NOW, fuboTV, Hulu Live TV, and YouTube TV.
In fact, the service also offers another, more premium tier, which ups the channel count for $49.99 per month. At that price, it still remains a cheaper option compared to other live TV streaming services. That is, as long as you do not need access to any of the additional features missing from Vidgo, including the option to record. For those that do want access to recording features, Vidgo might not be the service for them.
Why cloud DVR is important
Cloud DVR is important for a number of reasons although one of the most basic is the level of freedom it offers to subscribers. Having access to cloud DVR is one of the most common features among the major live TV streaming services and while the price or storage capacity might vary, any cloud DVR is better than none.
With access to cloud DVR, users receive an experience more similar to what they are already accustomed to with traditional TV and recording. In many ways, it is an upgraded experience as while storage limits exist, live TV streaming users tend to not have to worry about tuners. Instead, they can usually record multiple channels at the same time, and stockpile content for when they want to watch.
Without a cloud DVR feature, live TV streaming becomes a very basic service requiring subscribers to sit down and watch content when it is being broadcast live on the channel. This not only results in a situation where if you are not there on time then you miss out, but consumers also then lose access to the additional benefits typically associated with recordings, such as the ability to skip commercials.
Put simply, having access to cloud DVR massively improves the user experience and without its inclusion in the Vidgo streaming service, the overall product on offer is greatly reduced.

Why Vidgo does not offer recordings
Vidgo has not specified why it currently does not provide recording features. One of the likely reasons is simply the age of the service. While other live TV streaming services have launched with cloud DVR from day one, they tend to be from the major companies who already have an established video platform and have previously invested significantly in the user experience and interface.
In contrast, Vidgo is more of a ground-up service that is slowly building and evolving over time. For example, when Vidgo first launched a live TV streaming service, it was not the packages that are on offer today. Instead, the service launched with a greatly reduced channel lineup, albeit at a greatly reduced price.
Once this beta state came to an end, the service rolled out its current plans as a full live TV streaming service. In addition, while Vidgo did launch without typical features commonly found on other services, it did include some features that users are less likely to find on other options. The most notable of which is what Vidgo refers to as “social TV.”
Essentially, social TV adds a social element to TV watching, including the option to engage with others during watch parties. Conveniently, this is a feature purpose-designed for ‘in the moment’ viewing and this goes hand in hand with having to watch movies and shows as they happen, and not at a later date via cloud DVR.
When will Vidgo have cloud DVR?
It currently remains unclear when Vidgo will add cloud DVR to the service. What is clear is that the company says it intends to. However, this has been a line Vidgo has been using ever since launch. In fact, social media accounts related to the service were promoting cloud DVR as a Vidgo feature long before the launch.
While messages like this, and from so long ago, highlight the sustained commitment to offering cloud DVR, the reality is that there remains no firm date on when the feature will go live. If anything, the lack of a firm confirmation is likely to be enough to warrant caution when signing up to Vidgo and especially for those who might sign up with an understanding that the service will add cloud DVR in the future.
If recording features are an important factor to you, then it is worth considering another live TV streaming service. That is, at least until Vidgo provides an actual cloud DVR delivery date.
