Quibi Starts Streaming in April, Monthly Plans Start at $4.99

Quibi’s video streaming service will cost $4.99 and up when it launches in April, 2020. The latest details on the new streaming service were provided during a CES 2020 presentation in Las Vegas. Quibi is a service that’s focused on short-form content.

Quibi might be yet another streaming service, but it is trying to position itself as something unlike the rest of the market. For example, Quibi is all about short-form content and has no real ambitions to provide videos that run for longer than 10 minutes. That’s not to say the stories told will all be 10 minutes or less, but more so they will only be delivered in 10-minute segments.

During CES 2020, the company’s CEO Meg Whitman revealed Quibi will cost $4.99 per month. That price is particular to an ad-supported version as those looking to go ad-free will see the price rise to $7.99 per month. For both sets of subscribers, the service is due to go live in the U.S. on April 6, 2020.

Bite-sized videos, but not bite-sized stories

Quibi is a bite-size service designed to provide time-conscious content to subscribers whenever and wherever they are. In fact, the name itself is supposed to represent a bite-sized version of “quick bites.” The content is also expected to cover a variety of topics and genres with short videos covering news, sports, entertainment and more. The company says that it will be making available no less than 175 original shows and 8,5oo quick bites of content in the first 12 months alone.

With a focus so much on short duration content, the service is specifically trying to target viewers on mobile devices, including smartphones. This not only means content that’s optimized for smaller screens, but also features as well, such as easy to use gestures and orientations to suit both left and right-handed viewers. Adding to the orientation experience, the company announced a new feature it refers to as “Turnstyle” which looks to offer a seamless experience when switching between landscape and portrait. In some cases, offering a completely different perspective depending on the orientation.

With more details have now been provided, it remains to be seen whether Quibi will attract the market attention and subscribers that it hopes for. However, it is undeniably something new in what’s otherwise a market that’s only getting more crowded by the day.
