Apple is reportedly working on a new Apple TV player (with a new Apple TV remote) and a new workouts application for Apple TV. However, the details on these upgrades are limited, and there is no guarantee that any of them will arrive.

The 4th generation Apple TV launched in 2015 and was followed up by the Apple TV 4K in 2017. Since then, there hasn’t really been much in the way of updated hardware, even though the company has launched its own dedicated streaming service, Apple TV+ in between.

A new report from 9to5Mac is looking to confirm new hardware is coming. Technically, the outlet reported on the existence of the new set-top box last month, suggesting it will come with a more powerful chip. However, it has now expanded on that by suggesting the new box will also come with a new Apple TV remote. This will likely be welcomed news to those who are not fans of the existing remote, and may even be bigger news than the arrival of a new box, providing the changes are substantial enough.

In addition, the report also explains Apple is working on a new workouts application for Apple TV, which will allow people to do workouts at home and have the data sync with the Apple Watch and integrate Apple Music. Finally, in a separate report by the same outlet, there’s now an expectation that Apple TV will get a software option to select a permanent audio output.

No guarantees or release date

The first thing to be aware of is this information has come from 9to5Mac digging through beta and leaked iOS 14 code and finding references to the various changes and upgrades. While the code does definitely suggest that Apple is working on these things, that’s not the same as the changes and upgrades guaranteed to be coming through, or being exactly as described.

The second point to take into consideration is that there’s no firm suggestion on when any of these upgrades will arrive. The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference is due to take place in June, 2020, and it would be somewhat expected that if the products arrive later this year then they might get more of an official confirmation at the event. However, that’s providing the event (and its announcements) goes ahead as planned, considering the number of events that have been canceled in 2020 due to coronavirus.

A last, but important point, is there are currently no details on how much any new Apple TV 2020 hardware will cost. Considering Apple TV is expensive compared to other options, that could be the most important point.
