NBCUniversal has now confirmed when exactly its Peacock streaming service will launch and how much it will cost. Peacock is a streaming service that many are hotly waiting on as it brings the world of NBC content to more users, including cord cutters.
It had long been expected that NBCU would launch a streaming service considering it confirmed as much months ago. In fact, it was in mid-September when NBCU announced the “Peacock” name and explained its relation to the company branding and ethos. NBCU had also already confirmed the new service would arrive in the first half of 2020.
However, firmer details on availability and pricing had yet to be revealed with the company continually stating it would announce those details at a later time. That’s now what has changed with NBCU definitively explaining exactly when the service will launch, and just as importantly, what streamers will have to pay each month for access.
Peacock pricing starts at $0 per month
Today, NBCU explained that Peacock will have two going live dates. The first is on April 15 as this is when Comcast Xfinity X1 and Flex customers will be able to sign up. The second go live date is July 15 and this will be when the service is available to everyone. In terms of the price, the Peacock service will be available in two different tiers: Free and Premium.
The free tier obviously costs nothing as this version will come with ads as a means to monetize the experience. Along with being cheaper, this tier is also more limited in the scope of content that’s available – although the service still says it will offer more than 7,500 hours of programming, including next day access, complete classic series, popular movies, and more.
Peacock Premium on the other hand will be priced at $5 per month and up the content to over 15,000 hours. The increased content lineup will include Peacock originals as well as more sports, including access to Premier League games. Technically, Peacock Premium is also an ad-supported tier although subscribers will have the option of going ad-free for $9.99 per month instead of the $5. The one exception to this is Comcast and Cox customers as they will get the Premium ad-supported version at no extra cost with the option to go ad-free for just $5 per month.
Without mentioning specifics, NBCU also says it plans to bundle Peacock Premium with other parties in the future.
