Is Hulu + Live TV worth it? While this might be one of the newer live TV streaming services, there’s plenty of reasons why you should give Hulu live a try.

If you are new to streaming then you’ll find Hulu + Live TV an easy to use service that’s full of content. Likewise, if you’re an experienced streamer then you’ll also appreciate some of the more advanced features and perks that comes with being a Hulu TV subscriber.

As to be expected, it is not the perfect service as there are some areas where the service falls short compared to other TV streaming services. However, Hulu + Live TV is an excellent option for most people and here we’ll explain why.

If you don’t want to read through the actual explanations then here’s a summary of what’s covered in this guide.

Here are the 5 real reasons why Hulu + Live TV is worth it:

  • Reason 1: Content
  • Reason 2: Channels
  • Reason 3: Cloud DVR
  • Reason 4: Device support and experience
  • Reason 5: Fair price

Reason 1: Content, content, content

Probably the very best reason to go with Hulu + Live TV is the content. This is a service that’s far from being short on things to watch and the main reason for this is the Hulu back catalog.

Lots of content to choose from, including originals

Hulu typically charges a minimum of $5.99 per month for access to its Netflix-like on-demand content. However, Hulu + Live TV subscribers get it thrown in for free. While that’s only a $6 savings in reality, it is still $6 saved for current Hulu subscription subscribers and a whole lot of free shows and movies for those who don’t already subscribe to Hulu on-demand.

Very few live TV streaming services offer as much content as Hulu + Live TV without the user having to pay significantly more. If the amount of content matters to you, then Hulu + Live TV is the live TV streaming service for you.

Reason 2: Balanced channel lineup

By Hulu’s own accounts, its live TV package offers up roughly 70 channels although the exact number will depend on location due to the differences in local, regional, and national channels available in a given area. For reference, we received an extra 10 channels on top of the overall list bringing the total to just under 80. Again, your mileage may vary.

While 70 channels by default is not the most you can get from a live TV streaming service, the other important point to note about Hulu’s live TV channels is just how balanced they are overall. Some of the other services skew in one direction or another and while the Hulu + Live TV channel lineup won’t suit everyone, there’s enough access to local, entertainment, news and sports to suit most people’s needs.

In addition, those who want even more can always add a premium network to their package with Cinemax, HBO, Showtime and Starz all on offer.

Reason 3: Solid cloud DVR

If cloud DVR resigns supreme on your priority list then to be clear YouTube TV is the best live TV streaming service for recording content. It just is. However, Hulu + Live TV is no slouch in this department and when YouTube TV is taken out of the equation, Hulu might actually be the best.

Hulu offers 50 hours of cloud DVR included with the price and that’s more than any of the other non-YouTube TV services with the exception of Philo – who also provides unlimited. However, Philo offers less channels to record from to begin with, and only keeps recordings for 30 days. In comparison, Hulu will let you keep your recordings for as long as you like. With 50 hours included for free and the ability to keep recordings indefinitely, it’s hard to argue with Hulu’s cloud DVR feature.

Even in the case where you near more cloud DVR, Hulu will let you up that limit to 200 hours for an additional $9.99 per month. Although you have to pay a premium for the extra hours, not all services even give you the choice. Hi AT&T TV NOW.

Reason 4: Device support and experience

Technically, this could be two different reasons but we’ve decided to group them together as they are related. Either way, Hulu + Live TV is pretty good when it comes to device support with all the major platforms covered. The only notable exception is PlayStation as although the latest version of the Hulu app is available on PlayStation 3 and 4 consoles, live TV is not a supported feature.

Here’s the complete supported devices list, according to Hulu:

  • Android phones and tablets
  • Android TV (select models)
  • Apple TV (4th generation or later)
  • Chromecast
  • Echo Show
  • Fire Tablets
  • Fire TV and Fire TV Stick
  • iPhones and iPads
  • LG TV (select models)
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Mac and PC browsers
  • Roku and Roku Stick (select models)
  • Samsung TV (select models)
  • Vizio SmartCast TVs
  • Windows 10
  • Xbox 360
  • Xbox One

Besides the devices, the actual features and experience are also worth noting. Hulu + Live TV works pretty well on all the devices it is available on and the experience is fairly consistent across devices.

The interface itself is colorful, easy to use and does a good job of integrating live TV with the wealth of on-demand content. The same is true when you add a premium network to the equation as they are effortlessly and seamlessly integrated, and to the point where you might actually forget they are add-ons.

In short, the interface and experience just works.

Reason 5: Price is fair

Hulu recently raised the price of its live TV service and before that it was a much better deal than it currently is at $54.99 per month.

However, even when taking into consideration the price rise, Hulu + Live TV is still a highly competitive service. Again, this is in part thanks to the fact the standard Hulu on-demand subscription is included in the price.

While that might not matter to those who are not interested in signing up to the on-demand side, once you have access to the included content, you’ll probably be glad you have it. Those who are already Hulu on-demand subscribers are the real winners here as they are getting all of the live TV content and features for only $49 per month more than what they are already paying. Either way, at $55 per month, and when taking into consideration all the content and features, Hulu + Live TV offers great value for money. Just not as great as before.

The bottom line

When it comes to Hulu, you should keep watching

The bottom line is Hulu live TV is worth it. With this service you are getting a very good and balanced product overall. Even in areas where Hulu is not the absolute best, it still performs well, and generally better than many other services – cloud DVR being a prime example.

And that’s sort of the main takeaway with Hulu + Live TV. While you might find other services offer more (in an individual category) you probably won’t find one that outperforms Hulu in all, or even most, of the categories.

Across the board, Hulu + Live TV is a good live TV streaming choice and is worth a subscription.
