HBO Max subscribers can cancel their subscription quickly, easily, and either through the service’s website or mobile app. However, the method of cancelling does vary depending on how the subscription was started. Therefore, knowing exactly how to cancel an HBO Max subscription is an important way of ensuring you don’t pay for the service for longer than you want to.

HBO Max launched on May 27 in the US and opened up the door to a world of movies and shows that stretches well beyond the standard HBO Max experience. With the service having been live for a while now, the time might have come to consider ending the subscription and moving on.

While AT&T and WarnerMedia have a lot of content at their disposal, not all of it is currently available through the service. Therefore, if the movie and show lineup is not quite to your liking, or if you’ve already consumed all the content you plan to, then here’s how you can cancel an HBO Max subscription.

Note: The information directly below is for subscribers who have signed up to HBO directly. If subscribed through a third-party service or company, click here to skip to the next section.

One of the easiest ways to cancel an HBO Max subscription is to do it through the website.

HBO Max third-party subscriptions

While HBO Max has not arrived with as much device and platform support as many would have liked, there are still plenty of ways to sign up and start streaming. Besides the direct method, AT&T and WarnerMedia agreed deals with many other services, including the option to add it to a Hulu Live or YouTube TV subscription. This is in addition to a number of cable and satellite TV providers, as well as a variety of internet and wireless providers.

Depending on how a subscription was created directly impacts on how the subscription is cancelled. However, in most cases, the process should not be too difficult or dissimilar.

How to cancel through a provider

Regardless of how a consumer actually accesses and streams HBO Max content, the third-party service used to sign up is also key to cancelling a subscription.

What to know once cancelled

Although a subscriber might have now cancelled their HBO Max subscription, that doesn’t mean they cannot continue accessing the movies and shows for a limited time. As streaming services like HBO Max charge the user up front for the month ahead, subscribers retain access until the end of their current paid billing cycle.

This date will vary depending on when a subscription was started and can be viewed within the profile section.

View billing cycle end date through the website:

  1. Click on the Profile icon in the top-right corner
  2. Select “Billing Information”

View billing cycle end date through a mobile app:

  1. Open the HBO Max app
  2. Tap on the Profile icon in the bottom-left corner
  3. Tap on the Settings icon (cog) in the top-right corner

Regardless of whether accessing through the website or the mobile app, the subscriber’s individual cancellation date will be listed next to “Next Billing Date.” Up until then, cancelled subscribers are free to continue streaming HBO Max movies and shows.

HBO Max cancel subscription summary

While some streaming services can make it hard to figure out how to cancel a subscription, HBO Max does not. The navigation to the right section is extremely easy and just as importantly, is consistent across devices. As a result, subscribers can easily cancel their HBO Max subscription in just a few quick steps.

However, the important thing to remember is that an HBO Max subscription can really only be cancelled via the same method used to start the subscription. While the process will differ slightly, depending on the provider, it should be easy enough to do through the provider’s website, and the navigation not too dissimilar from what is explained above.
