The Apple TV app is now available to download on Chromecast with Google TV and select Android TV devices. As a result, those who prefer to use Google’s TV-optimized platform can now access content available through Apple, including subscribing to the company’s own Apple TV+ subscription service. In addition, support for the Apple TV app will be coming to more Android TV devices in the future.

The Apple TV app has been available on Apple’s devices for years now, but accessing on some other devices has proved more difficult. Although readily available on Amazon Fire TV and Roku players and sticks, as well as select LG smart TVs, devices and TVs powered by Android TV have been largely excluded. That’s now starting to change, beginning with Google’s own streaming device.

Google has confirmed the Apple TV app is now available to download on the Chromecast with Google TV. This is the company’s latest dongle device and one that runs on the Android TV platform, albeit under the guise of Google TV. The Apple TV app can either be downloaded and sent to a Chromecast with Google TV via the Google Play Store app listing, or on the Chromecast itself by searching for the app or navigating to the dedicated Apps section of the Google TV interface.

Besides the Chromecast, Google also confirmed the App will be available to download on Android/Google TV-powered TVs by both Sony and TCL. According to the announcement, this is only the beginning with the app support expected to expand to more Android TV devices in the months ahead.

Apple TV+ now an option

In reality, the Apple TV app itself won’t offer much that Android TV users cannot already access through the TV-optimized version of the Google Play Store. However, the one exception here is Apple TV+. This is the company’s own subscription service which provides access to a variety of Apple Originals shows and movies, including Ted Lasso, Servant, and The Morning Show.

While Apple is still providing consumers that buy an Apple device with a one-year Apple TV+ subscription for free, Android TV users planning to sign up to the service should expect to pay the normal cost. At present, a subscription to Apple TV+ is priced at $4.99 per month and a seven-day free trial is available.
